tip of the day - working with fabric covered buttons
I love the look of fabric covered buttons with some garments. I think they’re a little dressier - and definitely easier than matching an unusual fabric.
But what happens when you’re using an extremely thin or fine fabric to cover the buttons?
I’ve had problems with button caps popping off, just because the fabric wasn’t heavy enough to hold the cap onto the backing. Here are a couple of tips for your next project:
- After you’ve put the fabric & the cap into the form, put a dab of a good quality fabric glue (I like the Ultimate glue) Then, fold the raw edges in and put your backing in like normal.
- Interface the fabric, using a lightweight interfacing - it provides just enough bulk that the button cap is less likely to come off.
- Instead of interfacing, use a second layer of the fabric, or a lightweight broadcloth - again, it should add just enough bulk to save you from popping buttons!
Hopefully that will save your next set of self covered buttons from coming apart :-)
