how-to of the day: easy embroidered felt Easter egg ornaments

I know that this project is a little late, seeing as it’s the Easter weekend already, but you’ve still got a couple of days!
To begin, cut egg shapes out of different colored felt - these ones are approximately two inches wide:

Place them on a second piece of felt, but don’t cut it out.  Instead embroider […]

part five: how to go from photo to finished art

We’ve chosen a subject and taken photos.
We’ve used photo editing software to simplify the image.
We’ve sketched (and sketched, and sketched and sketched) and then painted.
We’ve used photo editing software again to help us decide on where to embroider.
And then we finally got to embroider :-)
But I wasn’t quite satisfied, so here’s my final solution:

There was […]

how to go from photo to finished fiber art?

I suggested playing with photo editing software to help with plan out stitching lines.  Now that we know where we’re going - it’s time to stitch!
I began with two shades of yellow - both plain old polyester sewing machine thread.  I wanted the yellow to be small “pops” of color to make it more interesting […]

part three: how to go from photo to finished art

how to go from photo to finished fiber art?

I’ve found that it’s pretty common for people to get completely excited & inspired… and then not know how to go about translating their inspiration to a completed piece of art. Here are a few simple steps to go from an object, to a finished piece of fiber art.
I’m using a small pot of […]

finished how-to of the day: embroidered felt sweethearts

If you need to catch up on this project, here’s part one and part two :-)
I’ve been making candy sweethearts out of felt - hey, they’re calorie free that way!  To finish the project, lay the heart on a sheet of the same colored felt, but don’t cut it out quite yet.  Using a straight […]

fiber art inspiration - Carol Shinn

It’s amazing what can be created using sewing machine thread!  Carol Shinn, a Colorado-based artist creates photo-realistic art works using thread painting.  Thread painting is essentially using thread & your sewing machine to create a work of art, instead paints & brushes.
