new poll - how well do commercial patterns fit you?

by Chloe on June 4th, 2008

I’ve been having a productive day in my studio - I just finished a tunic (Simplicity 4632) from the cotton gauze I dyed earlier this spring.

It’s the first time that I used this pattern so I checked my measurements against the pattern size.  I’m a “pear” shape, with shoulders narrower than my hips, so I also graded the pattern down a size across my bust & shoulders.

I sewed the shirt, embellished it with some embroidery stitches and then tried it on.

It’s still too big!

I think I can get away with it, as long as I wear a belt over top.  After all, the fabric is really light & gauze-y.

I’ve started a new poll to see how patterns fit you lovely ladies - do you find they vary from company to company, or can you pull one out of the envelope and use it as-is?

I am a plus size woman, and big on top. I guess most women ( in the eyes of the industry, anyways) are no bigger than a c cup, to begin with, and 36 or smaller. Not true with me! So, my my, is it difficult! Not only that, but because I can’t see what it looks like on me BEFORE I make it, even though I have to deal with darts, etc, it usually looks terrible! So I sew some stuff that is more like accessories - totes, etc. When I do. Also, plus size models are RARELY used, and they may be NO BIGGER than a size 14!
