Needlework Thoughts
I hope everyone had as lovely a weekend as I did! The weather has been just wonderful, perfect for doing a bit of gardening. It is no wonder so many artists feature nature in their works. Hsien-Hsien Lei alerted me to an article in the Times Online featuring embroidery.
“Since the 1920s it has been used increasingly as an art form, exhibited in gallery surroundings. Artists such as Tracey Emin and Michael Raedeker use it routinely in their work. We do promote it as a leisure activity but also very strongly as a professional practice.”
Those of us who do needlework already know that the notions of it being an artform relegated to elderly ladies are inaccurate. What is exciting about this article is that the writer has highlighted some of the current ways in which needlework (in this case embroidery in particular) are being used. From fashion to art, needlework isn’t just for decorating some throw pillows anymore.
