Just CrossStitch

by Deb on April 22nd, 2006

Just CrossStitch (Hoffman Media Inc) is a magazine I’ve been eyeing for a while now. I bought the April issue because I love the wild rose pattern highlighted on the front cover, and figured the pattern was worth the $6.99 even if the rest of the magazine sucked.

The layout of this magazine is ok- it can be hard to tell at first glance if some of the pages are part of an article or if they’re a slick advertisement. Overall the ratio of patterns to articles is pleasantly heavy on the patterns end. The ads don’t overpower the content, which is something that pleases me. The back contains the usual listings of shops- both brick&mortar and online.

I really am pleased with this issue, and plan on buying the May/June issue (how can I resist “folk-art hummingbirds”?) Before I spend the money for an annual subscription ($20 for 6 issues) I would prefer to know if the layout and pattern-to-article ratios are fairly consistent.

This issue has a lot of florals, but it also has a fun Latin Dance pillow the “Cha-Cha”, which is part of an ongoing series. A lot of classic type patterns, with few more contemporary ones. If you aren’t fond of flowers, this magazine probably isn’t for you.

Although not every issue is worth buying, sometimes one can find a surprisingly nice design to stitch. Such single design is worth buying the whole magazine indeed.
