Jam Jar covers, pattern
Recently I mentioned stitching covers for jam jars. I’d like to expand on that idea a little bit. Some of us are fairly crafty and will fearlessly weild our scissors upon defenseless cloth, and others of us want the tangible reassurance that a pattern provides. So, you may have been wondering how one goes about actually making a jam jar cover on which to stitch, or where to buy one so you don’t have to bother with the sewing part.
The basic idea is fairly simple: you need a circle of cloth that is a bit bigger than the lid you want to fit the cover upon, and you need a thin long rectangle of cloth or lace that will form the ruffled edge. You’ll also need some elastic, enough to go around the jar. Stitch a ruffle, sew it to your circle, add elastic. Those are the basic steps. The cloth you use for your circle, would be the aida, or evenweave, or linen on which you stitch your motif. Or if you wanted, you could use a checked gingham or baby check gingham fabric. Heck, anything really, as long as you can keep track of a grid for cross stitch. It doesn’t matter at all if you’ll be doing surface embroidery.
If you’d like some detailed instructions on constructing a jam jar lid cover, About.com has a really easy-to-follow tutorial.
If you’d rather purchase a pre-made cover, so all you have to do is stitch, you can likely buy one in a local shop, or from an online vendor. A couple places which sell an assortment of covers:
