Tangled Thread - Tips, Trick and Tutorials in Sewing & Stitching

easy embroidered shawl - tutorial

by Chloe on June 9th, 2007

I figured that it’s been long enough since I posted my last tutorial/sewing lesson for you all :-)

Since we’re definitely in the swing of wedding/prom/graduation/garden party etc season - it’s nice to have project that’s easy & quick to do & still looks like a million bucks!  This shawl takes about two hours from start to finish - and it’s easy enough to whip up in one sitting.

For this project you’ll need approximately 2 yards (or less, if you want a shorter shawl) of 45″ wide chiffon.  You can also use organza, but it’s got a crisper hand and doesn’t drape as nicely.   You’ll also need about 2.5 yards of beaded fringe (the kind that comes pre-sewn onto a ribbon) and matching thread.

Trim the selvages from all four sides of the fabric, and make sure all your ends are squared off.   Either use the rolled hem foot on your sewing machine or make a 1/4″ hem (folded under twice, so no raw edges are showing) around all four edges.

Fold under the raw ends on the beaded fringe & pin it to the short ends of the shawl.   I used a decorative embroidery stitch to stitch the fringe to the fabric, but that’s optional.  I would recommend using a contrasting color of thread to do a decorative stitch.  The fabric I chose was a border print, so I used the same color as the decorative border to stitch the fringe on.

The shawl is quick & easy to make… and even better, looks great!
