dealing with lost work

by Chloe on April 2nd, 2007

Sorry for the lack of updates yesterday… I got nailed with a migraine as I was teaching a class & that pretty much knocked me out of commission for the rest of the day.  Not so much fun.

I recently got an unpleasant letter from a store who carried my work on commission.  They were doing a store inventory of my work for me & found that one of my small art quilts had gone missing.  Unfortunately, I had signed a contract stating that I am liable for all losses, and so am completely out of pocket on this one.

(the stolen quilt)

I also had a very bad experience with a store going out of business without notifying artists who had work on display there.   I sure got a shock when I drove by the store & discovered they were no longer there!  It turns out that they threw artwork in the garbage.     Luckily, a good samaritan had saved one of my pieces of art, but a second piece I had on display has been lost.

Unfortunately, it seems like it’s inevitable to have work stolen if you display it publicly.  So how do you deal with the loss of artwork?  Shrug your shoulders & declare a tax loss or mourn it?  Not a fun subject to talk about, but a part of life it seems!

1 opinion for dealing with lost work

I’ve experienced the same thing with my jewelry. One shop that I had sold to for years just up and closed one day, owing me about $100 too. I agree. It’s part of the j-o-b when you turn a craft/art into a career, but it sucks just the same.
