Cross stitch update - Frederick

by Deb on April 19th, 2006

I had hoped to finish the lower right quarter of this piece this weekend, but didn’t. The endless reds of the books were incredibly dull to stitch. The last couple days however have proven that stitching black-on-black is even more boring. And tedious. I can’t wait to be done with this section so I can get back to areas of the pattern that have some variety!!! I’m also hoping that the basting threads I put in at the beginning, will pull out politely. Am feeling a bit concerned that there will be parts of them I have to leave in the final result. I found a couple of places online that sell marking pins for keeping track of where you are in your stitching that are really cool. Basically a decorated/beaded hat pin with a little cap on the ouchie end. I’ve seen them for sale at the Nordic Needle and would think that many other needlework suppliers would carry them as well. I haven’t checked my LNS yet (though I did look for the basic pins w/ caps and could only find ones with no caps. I thought it might be fun to make my own.) I don’t think I want to baste in marking stitches on high-count fabric, especially the more expensive linens and evenweaves.

Enough of the rambling, here’s the latest progress picture of Frederick the Literate:

You did a lot on Frederick; dunno, usually the boring one-color areas are worked very fast at mine’s. Still, I don’t work yet on black fabric, so what do I know?

I am using such kind of pins to mark my place on the chart. Well, not so luxury looking as those.

The problem with the boring color areas is that it doesn’t hold my attention very well, so whatever else is going on distracts me. There were also two shades of red, and two shades of blended browns, which required counting. I’m to the black-on-black section now though, which just means getting the angle of the light on fabric just-right, and that goes fairly quickly.

[…] I am finding in my own stitching, however, that the big projects can start being less fun to stitch. No fun with stitching = less time spent stitching. What to do? Work on a different project for a while. Right now I’m setting aside Frederick because working on the black cloth tires my eyes and my enthusiasm for it is fading. I love the design, and want to enjoy stitching it, and looking at it some day framed and hanging on the wall in our “library”. […]
