Tangled Thread - Tips, Trick and Tutorials in Sewing & Stitching

“Crewel World”

by Deb on March 22nd, 2006

I am a fan of the murder mystery novel genre. There are many mystery writers whose works I enjoy, but not as many who include needlecrafts in their stories. There are even fewer which I have encountered that make stitching the focal point.

Imagine my delight last fall then, when I came across the author Monica Ferris. This talented lady has written several books highlighting various forms of stitching. The first book in her Needlecraft Mystery series is Crewel World.

As a person whose own skills and knowledge have gaping holes when it comes to needle arts, I was hooked from the first chapter on this story of a woman who inherits a needlecraft shop unexpectedly. The story is, in my opinion, well written and leaves one wanting more after the last page is turned. We follow Betsy on her journey to a small town, witness her trauma over her sister’s murder, and her insecurity about running a needlecraft shop. Does any of this keep Betsy down? Not a chance. Instead of wilting under her misfortune, Betsy begins sleuthing to discover the murderer. Liberally mixed into the story are many moments of tidbits about floss, works in progress, various types of stitching, and other curious factoids. The story ended too soon and I was left wanting more. Fortunately for me, and anyone else who loves this author, there are plenty more which follow.

And, as an added bonus, the book includes a needlepoint pattern in the back! For a book lover and a stitcher, it doesn’t get much better than that.
