three blooms in one evening

The night-blooming cereus decided to grace my studio with not one, but three blooms last night!
Unfortunately, I was teaching for most of the evening, so here’s what they looked like just before I left:

And then the full bloom after the sun had set:

I definitely think there is a piece of embroidered fiber art in there […]

I think they’re blooming tonight…

I’m so excited - my night-blooming cereus looks like it may have several blossoms tonight!

It certainly inspires me to get my sketch book out and start planning a piece of fiber art based on the flowers :-) I think painting the background and then using wool or silk fibers and fabric to form the […]

Goods 4 Girls

Are you looking for a new sewing project to benefit charities?
I think that Goods 4 Girls is a fantastic project to participate in!  Goods 4 Girls was created to help young women in Africa who don’t have regular access to sanitary menstrual products.  It can drastically affect their lives - it can mean the difference […]

De-Stash Your Studio challenge - the final check in

It’s Earth Day my lovely readers, and do you know what that means?  The end of the De-Stash Challenge!
I’ve kept my promise, I haven’t bought any fabric since the challenge began, on March 17th.   Those of you who know me well, know that isn’t the easiest thing for me :-)  I’ve only been seriously tempted […]

just a brief safety reminder

I consider myself fairly competent with tools.  I own several power tools, I’ve taken classes - I spent my teenage years on a farm…  And yet, somehow I still managed to do this to my arm yesterday:

color forecasts for sewing enthusiasts

My sister-in-law just sent me this inspiring website from Cosmoworlds - their winter 2008/2009 forecasts!
They’ve come up with four set of colors, as well as their picks for the hot fabrics too - seriously yummy!

“Construct”

“Preserve”

“Reflect”

and last but not least “Revive”.
I can definitely work with those colors - good inspiration for a grey day!

are you taking care of yourself in the studio?

I’ve been working away madly on Christmas presents (unfortunately, I just can’t show any pictures until after Christmas!) and spent most of my morning & afternoon hunched over my sewing machine.
I’m as guilty as the next person when it comes to paying attention to how I’m feeling as I work. Inspiration or even just […]

tip of the day - using swatch boards

I’m working on a piece of fiber art with a minimum of 25 different colors & prints on it.  I’ve got a very definite idea about what I’m doing, but what happens when I go to my stash and it looks like this:

Or this:

Or… this:

Inspiring, luscious, yummy - oh yes!  But I need to get […]

planning with computer collages

I’ve got a question for you all?
How many of you use computers to help plan your art or craft work?
Here’s an example of what I’m talking about:

It’s a collage I put together from these two pieces:

That’s the back of a portfolio I designed.

And the horses from my art quilt “Dawn“.
I started playing around with different […]

30 things I need (or want) in my studio

I’ve been playing around with lists lately and have come up with my wishlist for my ideal studio - want to see?

Good quality natural light - I’m a fan of Eastern & Northern exposure light if I can get it.
It’s got to be generously sized - my current studio is approximately 10 feet square. […]
