igolochkoy Christmas tree ornament

I finally had a chance to sit down this afternoon and finish the embroidery on my latest project, an igolochkoy (Russian punch needle embroidery) Christmas tree ornament:

I used plain cotton DMC floss for the berries, outline of the leaves & the border. The pale green leaves are silk floss that I picked up in […]

Igolochkoy or Russian punch-needle embroidery

Is there a technique that you used to love doing but haven’t had the time/energy/whatever for lately?
I’ve been thinking about taking up igolochkoy again.  It’s also known as Russian punch-needle embroidery and I used to love doing it as a child & teenager.  It’s a technique of embroidery, using a fine needle to push floss […]

Hallowe’en embroidery patterns

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted goodies for my hand-embroidery crowd - so I thought it would be fun to dig up some patterns for Hallowe’en projects.
Here’s a cross-stitch pattern from About.com, designed by Connie Thomas.

This adorable Hallowe’en bookmark was designed by Bev Qualheim

Or if you want to get a little more ambitious, how about […]

tip of the day - working with fabric covered buttons

I love the look of fabric covered buttons with some garments.  I think they’re a little dressier - and definitely easier than matching an unusual fabric.
But what happens when you’re using an extremely thin or fine fabric to cover the buttons?
I’ve had problems with button caps popping off, just because the fabric wasn’t heavy enough […]

part 2 of rubber stamps and embroidery

Here’s the painted silk, after I let it dry overnight and then embroidered:

I did simple free-motion machine embroidery outlining the butterflies.  I used rayon embroidery thread, which I love using for projects like this because of the sheen.
If I had more time, I would get more detailed with embroidering the butterfly wings - but I […]

inspiration from the fashion world

I was going through photos of the recent Haute Couture fashion shows in Paris for my other blog, Her Accessories, and noticed some amazing pieces of clothing.
Check out the embroidery on this jacket from designer Franck Sorbier:

Isn’t that spectacular?
This dress is also by Franck Sorbier:

I’m not sure if it’s beaded or embroidered… but I’d love […]

art postcard contest

Have you tried making an art postcard?  They’re like a large version of an artist trading card, but can be sent through the mail.  I’ve seen some spectacular art cards!

Art Card Ideas is running a contest to find the best 52 art postcards they can.  The postcards will then be published in their  new “Art […]

Simplicity Patterns fall sneak peek

Simplicity has just released their early fall collection! They have some very cute patterns - I would definitely make some of these purses:

It’s pattern #3715

It’s nice to see more men’s patterns being included - they’re hard to find sometimes. This is pattern #3708.

I’d wear some of these blouses :-) I think I […]

different methods of pattern transfers

I’m enjoying an afternoon in my studio and wanted to work on my backlog of projects :-)  I’m trying to complete an overdue gift for my sister-in-law & thought I’d share it with you all.
I’m making a table runner out of a cotton-linen blend fabric.  I’m going to applique a celtic interlace on to the […]
