finishing the memorial textiles

I thought I should share with you what I’ve been working on for the past several weeks… As you know, I’ve been working with my mom, Noreen, to create a set of memorial textiles (antependia - or sacred textiles) for my grandmother’s church.
It’s been exactly a year ago today that my beloved Nana passed away […]

easy kids crafts - felt flowers

Don’t worry - the rest of the silk paper tutorial is coming soon :-)   I’ve got an easy kids craft, perfect for getting kids interested in sewing:

Cut two basic flower shapes from felt and sandwich a pipe-cleaner (folded in half and twisted together) between the two.  Cut a small circle from a contrasting piece of […]

how-to of the day: embroidered felt sweethearts

Sorry for the delay in getting this published :-)  Here’s how I made sweethearts out of felt - not candy!
I asked you to get some candy-colored felt, along with a heart-shaped cookie cutter (or other heart-shaped template) in my last post.

Use the cookie cutter as a template and trace around it - using a water-soluble […]

see who just came to live with me

I’m a very lucky person - I just got to bring her home :-)   The tapestry was hand-embroidered by my very talented mom and I finally got to bring it to my house!  Lady Godiva is approximately a yard square and densely hand-embroidered, a full year’s worth of handwork.  No machine stitching, but lots of […]

how to of the day: softies hearts for Valentine’s day

I thought it would be fun to do a machine-sewn project for Valentine’s day, but didn’t feel like making anything too cutesy.  The solution?  Off-kilter, wobbly hearts!
To start off with you’ll need a selection of fabric (I’m using printed 100% cotton quilting fabric) scissors, thread, fiber-fill and a hand-sewing needle.

Because I don’t want the hearts […]

more heart-felt cards

I showed what you can do with a simple running stitch earlier, but you can also use french knots to make the Valentine’s day cards as well:

It’s definitely more time consuming, but I like the look of the little decorative knots around each layer of felt.

silk floss

I’ve had a few requests for the source of the silk floss I used in the igolochkoy Christmas tree ornament.  I finally tracked their website down!  Prepare to drool…

Is that not a luscious photo?  Those are some of the colors that The Silk Tree in British Columbia carries.   You can also buy it at […]

igolochkoy Christmas tree ornament

I finally had a chance to sit down this afternoon and finish the embroidery on my latest project, an igolochkoy (Russian punch needle embroidery) Christmas tree ornament:

I used plain cotton DMC floss for the berries, outline of the leaves & the border. The pale green leaves are silk floss that I picked up in […]
