need that last half yard to finish a project?

I just stumbled across this website and had to share it with you all!  It’s called “Missing Fabrics“, and has exactly just that :-)
It’s a multi-part website - they’ve got an online gallery that you can post photos of the discontinued fabrics that you need.  So if you see a piece of fabric on there, […]

part five: how to go from photo to finished art

We’ve chosen a subject and taken photos.
We’ve used photo editing software to simplify the image.
We’ve sketched (and sketched, and sketched and sketched) and then painted.
We’ve used photo editing software again to help us decide on where to embroider.
And then we finally got to embroider :-)
But I wasn’t quite satisfied, so here’s my final solution:

There was […]

leap years & the Lifestyles channel

There’s a challenge for the Lifestyles channel to write a post about what you were doing four years ago (for the last leap year), what you’re doing now and what you hope to be doing in the next leap year.
Let’s see…
Four years ago I was:

Single
Living on a farm
With several dogs
Had blue hair
Had an enthusiastic […]

how to go from photo to finished fiber art?

I suggested playing with photo editing software to help with plan out stitching lines.  Now that we know where we’re going - it’s time to stitch!
I began with two shades of yellow - both plain old polyester sewing machine thread.  I wanted the yellow to be small “pops” of color to make it more interesting […]

Aww - I have have the best readers :-) Thank you all for your lovely comments, things are feeling much more positive today!
Okay, so we last left off with a painted, but not embroidered piece of fabric. But do you really know where you want to embroider? Do you want to take […]

short but sweet Sunday links

I would like to apologize for being a little slow with getting the rest of the “turning photos into art” tutorial.  It’s been a challenging weekend to say the least - I just found out that a store I teach at is firing all of their instructors - which includes me…  My dishwasher decided to […]

t-shirt surgery

I think everyone has a t-shirt sitting in the back of their closet that doesn’t quite fit right - but that you’re still not willing to part with…
T-Shirt Surgery is an online community where people can post photos & tutorials for different ways to re-work their non-working tees.  There are some great ideas on their […]

fashionable fabric jewelery

Maggie, from the Jewelery Weblog has found some fantastic jewelery made out of fabric!  There aren’t any instructions, but I think that the photos are a great starting place for inspiration :-)

part three: how to go from photo to finished art

Okay, so we’ve taken our photographs,  used photo editing software to make seeing the basic composition easier… now what?
It’s time to start sketching!

The point of making a basic sketch is to give you a bare-bones idea of the basic shapes you’re using in the piece of fiber art.  It doesn’t need to be a “perfect” […]
